Citizen just launched Tatzoo, an innovative project that recruits young leaders to launch creative community-based projects to help save local endangered species. The incentive for participants is the chance to receive custom artwork of their chosen species by one of 11 world-class tattoo artists.
The project is supported by a TogetherGreen Fellowship I received from the National Audubon Society. As I say, it was a crazy idea that Audubon was brave enough to believe in it and Citizen was creative enough to bring it to life.
Not many young people realize we are on the verge of the sixth greatest extinction in over 25 million years, threatening to kill 30% of all species within our lifetimes. That's messed up, heartbreaking, and incredibly dangerous. This project stemmed from the belief that my generation must unleash our fresh ideas, fearless attitudes, and social connectivity to tackle this crisis, starting with our local species and communities.
Tatzoo focuses its efforts on California’s biodiversity hotspot and 15 local endangered species, ranging from the lovable Sea Otter to the majestic California Condor to the tiny Bay Checkerspot Butterfly. Every category of species is represented, including mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.
"I like the idea that this project will connect people in a very real visual and physical way to the specific species facing extinction,” said Jason Stein of Cyclops Tattoo, based in San Francisco. “Also, nothing grabs people's attention like a fresh brightly colored tattoo."
By design, Tatzoo employs “crowd sourcing” to uncover new and creative ideas for activating the Millennial Generation. The challenge to participants is to engage 100 people in the course of 100 days to help save a local endangered species in California. How you do it is totally up to you. The first ideas that have been submitted combine art, multi-media and even beer in their approach, a reflection of the out-of-the-box thinking Tatzoo is targeting.
Individuals have until August 5, 2010 to submit ideas and vote for their favorite projects via Facebook. The 15 people with the best ideas will be given a free Flip video camera, donated by Cisco, to document their journey and a real tattoo of their species at the completion of their project as a symbol of their leadership. The 15 Tatzoo projects will launch on August 8, 2010 and last until November 16, 2010.
